There’s something about dog outfits for small dogs… they’re freaking cute! If you’ve ever tried dressing your dog up in chihuahua clothes, one thing you’ll notice is that people can not help but keep their eyes and hands off your little dog, even if you tell them not to; it’s very hard for them to resist.
If you’ve got a maltese and you take him to the office and he’s got little clothes on, everyone is going to want to come over and pet that dog. You’ve got shirts for little dogs, you’ve got smaller dog clothes for the little breeds like chihuahuas, you even see them showing up in the movies more and more as our pets share the spotlight with their human actor counterparts. And you’ve got online boutiques with dog clothing popping up left and right, with new ones every week it seems.
These dog clothes take the natural cuteness of these little dogs and they amp it up… it’s like chicken soup crack for the adorable dog’s soul! These little dog outfits make it nearly impossible for anybody to ignore your dog, so I definitely don’t recommend them if you’re trying to keep to yourself and you’re having a crappy day or something and you just want to be left alone–do not dress up your dog in small clothing in this case because everyone is going to want to come over and talk to you and it’s going to be a situation where the two of you become an attention magnet.
That said, if you do want attention, there’s nothing that breaks the ice more consistently and easy than chihuahua clothing on a little dog. Even as someone who thought it was ridiculous, small dogs wearing their funky fashion apparel was very hard to resist commenting on, either to my friend I was with or directly to the owner herself. There’s something about these little dog outfits for small dogs… they’re adorable, they’re cute, they’re cuddly–it’s INSANE!

I love cheap dog clothes, especially when I find them for my little chihuahua. They’re cute, they’re snuggly, they’re cheap, and they tend to make everyone in sight love your little bundle of chihuahua joy, instantly!
But something I’ve learned you have to look out for when purchasing cheaper clothes for dogs is the itch factor. Sometimes you can go to buy a cheap shirt for your dog, perhaps a knit sweater of some kind that’s made of wool, and you’ll put it on your little dog and it will make her itch her like crazy. You’ll put it on your poor chihuahua and her back foot will arch up and start scratching behind the ears and along the side, and the head will be twisting and contorting so she can reach that spot! Darn it!–I…must.. just…reach…. that spot! 🙂
My joking asside, it can be a good idea to test out dog clothes for this first, before you buy them. The easiest way to do this of course to is to simply take your chihuahua with you to the pet store (or whatever breed you have) and try them before buying them. Most pet stores allow you to bring your dog in with you these days, so you can take advantage of that and bring your little chihuahua dog in with you, bring her to the isle of dog clothes, and then test out those you’re interested in. Pick the sweater or coat that you think you’d like to buy, and then test it out on her: put the clothes on her and let her wear it for a few minutes while you browse the rest of the small dog clothing, and see pay attention and observe your chihuahua to see if she’s itching at all as a result of the clothes.
Most of the time, itching never comes up and this isn’t a problem, in my experience. But I’ve just recently had an experience with my chihuahua where I bought her a cute new pink little dog parka. I put it on her and everyone was absolutely swooning over how cute it was, but then I noticed something I’ve never seen her do before in response to wearing her clothes: she started itching! It it wasn’t just like a little scratch either: I’m talking a full blown itch-o-mania! It was kind of crazy.
At the time, I was thinking my little chihuahua was having some kind of allergic reaction to the material this parka was made of, but it was weird because the parka didn’t appear to be made of anything special or different from the cheap clothes my chihuahua or any of my little dogs have worn in the past.
It was a truly bizarre moment!
So I took the clothes back to the store and returned them. And with my little dog with me, we went and tested out a few more affordable coats for little dogs. Lo and behold, after a few minutes of testing different ones, we came across yet another article of clothing that was itching her like crazy! It bore no resemblance to the pink parka I’d returned, but it was causing the same itch reaction with my poor chihuahua. Weird.
The only thing I can think of is that somewhere along the way, one of the employees accidentally dropped a few of these coats onto something like fiberglass insulation or something similarly irritating to the skin, and then those pieces of dog clothing somehow they made their way onto the store shelves. Now, I’m swinging at air here, but that’s about the only explanation that comes to mind for me. The two coats we tried out on my chihuahua dog were completely different in every sense: different material, different design, and from a different company.
Luckily, we found a few good inexpensive dog shirts for her to wear this spring, so we’re both very happy about that: her with the added cuteness she’ll be sporting, and me here with the camera ready! Oh god, something tells me I’m turning into one of those crazy dog persons. Anyway, keep this in weird thing in mind: if your chihuahua starts itching the bejesus out of herself after you put that new chihuahua clothing on her, you may be experiencing something similar to what we went through here with these itchy cheap dog clothes, and you may consider returning them to the store like we did to try out some different shirts and sweaters instead.

Chihuahua Clothes – A Fashion Obsession!
When people think of chihuahua clothes and shirts and coats for smaller dogs, they’re commonly perceived strongly in the light of fashion over function. How often have we seen Paris Hilton in the media with her teacup chihuahua Tinkerbell dressed up in a fantastically funky chihuahua clothes outfits? Many tend to associate Paris Hilton and a lot of the negative aspects of celebrities with the act of dressing your dog in chihuahua clothes, but the reality is there are some very practical reasons for bundling up your pooch in shirts, sweaters, and even little chihuahua costumes, besides making her into a mini K9 fashionista, and they have to do with keeping her warm and comfortable.
And of course, there’s the much more common reason people dress up their chihuahuas in cute little chihuahua clothes: to make their little chihuahua dogs look insanely adorable! But from what I’ve seen in the dog owners I’ve met, dressing you chihuahua up in chihuahua clothing and the latest small dog fashion is usually much more about having fun and enjoying watching your little dog run around in articles of chihuahua clothes than it is for making her comforable and making her day, if I’m honest!
With that said, whether you have a teacup chihuahua, or you’ve got a long haired chihuahua, or maybe you’re a proud owner of a chihuahua rescue dog; clothing your little dog in chihuahua clothes is often a good idea because these little dogs tend to cool off easily and can spend most of their time shivering and shaking if they’re not wearing these little chihuahua clothes designed for chihuahua doggies to keep them warm. When we bring them into our more relaxed, indoor lives, even in warmer climates, these little dogs get cold and really prefer (once they’re used to it) wearing their chihuahua clothes and having an extra layer of “fur” or two on their back, to help keep them warm. And if you live with your chihuahua dogs in a cold climate, then you know what I’m talking about, and you probably have an entire wardrobe full of chihuahua clothes for them!
I’ll say that there definitely is a controversy among dog owners surrounding the topic of dressing your dog up in shirts and cute little chihuahua clothes costumes. Many people think it’s insane and ridiculous and that it’s borderline abusive to dress your toy chihuahua up and that you’re damaging their self esteem, and on and on…. And Cesar Millan would have us see us our chihuahuas as dogs first, before chihuahua clothes-clad”cutie pie chi chi”–the personality of the dog–second, and I totally agree with him. But who are we kidding?! Let’s be honest here: we brought these little munchkins into our lives so we could dress them up in chihuahua clothes costumes and make them adorable …while taking care of them, hahaha!
There are a lot of fashionable clothes for smaller breeds of dogs out there. Take a stroll through your local pet store and you’re bound to find an isle with chihuahua clothes and attire for other small breeds that you can dress your dog up with. And if you search around online, you’ll find vast quantities more of clothes for dogs just waiting to find their way onto the back of your cute little chihuahua and charm everyone you pass by on your walk–I can hear the “oooOOOHHhh, how cute!” voices already!–dressing your chihuahua up can be a lot of fun and it’s a very easy way to star conversations and meet people! The function aspect of chihuahua apparel has to do with keeping your small dog warm. Chihuahuas originate from Mexico, a very warm country, and so they have adapted to live in warmer climates with short, thin hair and a higher metabolism. When we bring them into cooler climates and we don’t clothe them in chihuahua clothes, they tend to find it rather cold and spend a lot of the time shaking, I’m sure you’ve noticed. Even if you live in a warmer climate, they’ll often shake a night when indoors because they aren’t sleeping with a pack of other dogs and are, instead, on the kitchen floor or on a bed without anything covering them. Even Amazon.com carries a decent selection of chihuahua clothes today. Now, I’m not going to bash them: Amazon is a great company and I love their service, but the clothes I’ve seen on their site–the chihuahua wedding dresses and the chihuahua tuxedos, and all those other funky chihuahua outfits I’ve perused over the past few years on their site–all seem a tad bland to my eyes. They do have some good discounts once in a while on their cheap chihuahua clothes, but I have never bought from them, and it’s rare that I talk to anyone who’s really into chihuahua fashion who has almost anything in the way of chihuahua dog pajamas or cool chihuahua bathrobes from them. I’m not saying you can’t find good chihuahua clothes for little dogs from Amazon, I’m just saying I think you can find better, higher quality ones, elsewhere.
